Upcoming Concert To Benefit Charleston 9 Memorial

We have just learned that the promoter for the upcoming Fresh Music Festival (taking place on Saturday June 16th at 8:00pm) at the North Charleston Coliseum has agreed to donate $1 of every ticket purchased, for the concert, to the Charleston Firefighters Association - Local 61 for the Charleston Nine Memorial Project.

Mayor Joe Riley anounced the final four candidates for the CFD's new Fire Chief yesterday. The four candidates will visit the city on April 30th (A-Shift) for a tour and what the Mayor is calling an orientation.  The candidates will also visit some of Charleston's Fire Houses and meet with some members of the Fire Department.

As you may already know, Local 61 has cancelled this year's Run For The Nine - Memorial 5K.  In lieu of the Run For The Nine, Local 61 has partnered with the 9/11 Heroes Run and it's event coordinator and CFD Wife Theresa Faircloth to bring this year's event to Charleston for the FIRST time ever.

The Center For Public Integrity, Global Integrity and Public Radio International recently released a study called the 'State Integrity Investigation'.  In it, the groups revealed that 8 U.S. states received failing grades when it comes to transparency, accountability and anti-corruption efforts.

We regret to inform all of our followers and supporters that the Run For The Nine-Memorial 5K has been cancelled for 2012. Last year's organizers worked very hard to build a quality event for all our participants and we truly hope you all enjoyed it.  It was a truly a difficult decision to come by and we explored many avenues to try and avoid cancelling the run.

Help a Fallen Brother

On October 19th, 2011, Firefighter Don Beckett of the Kent Fire Department in Kent, Ohio passed away after a year long battle with Esophageal Cancer. Don's death was ruled a LODD, as it was determined by his doctors and the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Board that he contracted the disease as a result of on the job exposures.
